The singer filed the documents at Los Angeles County Superior Court to begin her separation from her Fall Out Boy bassist partner.
Simpson and Wentz married in May 2008 after first beginning dating in 2006.
They were married by her pastor father Joe Simpson, with her older sister Jessica acting as maid of honour during the nuptials.
A son named Bronx Mowgli was born to the pair in November 2008, with the former couple's divorce papers stating that they should have joint custody of the two-year-old.
Ashlee's sister may be hoping for better luck in love the second time round as she recently announced she was engaged to her boyfriend Eric Johnson.
She has previously been married to singer Nick Lachey and starred with him in the reality TV programme Newlyweds.
